Dead Lettuce on the Dirty Ground
We asked our neighbors to kindly harvest and consume our lettuce (les oreilles du diable to be exact) while we were gone. But they are much too polite to go hacking in our garden, and with something like six straight days of extremely hot weather, we ended up losing five of the eight lettuces to bolting. The flowers actually came and burned out by the time we got back.
I was able to harvest a big bowlful, though, and three plants remain, which is probably more than enough, anyway. Still, lettuce was our greatest achievement so far, and now the majority of it’s in the composter. But that just means more room to plant some fall stuff, right? Who has some fall stuff for me?
